Owners Rick Noel and Kim Kandaras discussed the effects of COVID-19 in the funeral industry with RGJ Reno Gazette Journal.

“On Monday, Rick Noel received a call from a potential client. Like many others, this client had just lost a loved one.

But there was something else: The loved one died at a local hospital and medical staff suspected that the deceased may have been infected with COVID-19, the highly contagious virus that has caused a global pandemic and forced communities worldwide to self-isolate.

The client said the test results for the virus had not come back yet.

Noel and co-owner Kim Kandaras own a cemetery and 15 funeral or cremation-related service sites in the Northern Nevada and Susanville area. Noel said the guidelines change day by day on how such services are supposed to operate during the coronavirus pandemic.

How many people can gather. How the body can be prepared. Even how paperwork is handled.

It is definitely a challenge to create the same experience for clients that they might typically expect while the world faces a pandemic, the owners said.

“It is vital that people gather,” said Kandaras of the grieving process. “It’s really a healing time for people to share stories and hugs and have some laughs. It’s not all about loss, but about celebration too.”

Owners Rick Noel and Kim Kandaras discussed COVID-19 impacts on the funeral industry with KOLO 8 News Now.

Our employees are proud to support their community! At our holiday party, they donated new men’s sock and underwear for the Reno-Sparks Gospel Mission.

We are proud to announce our own Rick Noel and Kim Kandaras are the new owners of Walton’s Funerals and Cremations.

After six decades serving families across Northern Nevada and California, Walton’s Funerals and Cremations has new owners.

Tammy Dermody completed the sale of the Reno-based business to Walton’s staffers Rick Noel and Kim Kandaras on Nov. 27, according to a Dec. 6 press release provided by MNG Partners Inc. on behalf of Walton’s.

The transaction — financial terms of which were not disclosed — included the sale of Cremation Society of Nevada, which Walton’s owned.

Walton’s Funerals and Cremations had been family owned and operated since 1959, first led by Ed McCaffery and then by Dermody, McCaffery’s daughter, who joined the business in 1986. She took over full ownership after Ed passed away Jan. 28, 2018.

According to the Dec. 6 release, Noel has been with the company for more than 18 years, most recently as General Manager. Over the past seven years, he has been responsible for daily operations, financial management, staff oversight, community relations and marketing.

Noel is a third-generation funeral service professional and has been a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer for 33 years. He’s also a member of the Executives Association of Reno, serving on its board of directors.

“While a change in ownership does represent a milestone in the company’s history, Walton’s Funerals and Cremations and the Cremation Society of Nevada will continue operating as they have for the past six decades, led by local owners with a commitment to the community and the families we serve,” Noel said in a statement.

Kandaras has been with the company for 15 years, serving in the role of Controller. She has been responsible for budgeting, oversight of accounting staff, reporting, risk management and controls, as well as operational oversight in her role.

She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Nevada Society of Public Accountants, and the Society for Human Resource Management.

“We would like to thank all those who have been a part of what has made serving families for generations so fulfilling and we look forward to our next chapter as a company,” Kandaras said in a statement.

Noel and Kandaras will continue to serve in their roles as they oversee daily operations of both businesses.

All told, Walton’s Funerals and Cremation and the Cremation Society of Nevada have 10 locations in Northern Nevada (including the original Walton’s location in Reno at the corner of Second and Vine streets); one in Susanville, California; one cemetery in Carson City; and four crematories.

Team “Sadie’s Supporters” was recognized for “Excellence in Fundraising” from this year’s JDRF One Walk!

In September, Walton’s supported one of our funeral arrangers Sadie Quartucci, who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in January 2015. The JDRF One Walk raises funds for scientific research to better treat, prevent, and ultimately cure type 1 diabetes.

Walton’s Funeral and Cremations has been recognized by the Nevada Donor Network as Funeral Home Partner of the Year.

Walton’s was honored with this recognition for the third time on Nov. 7 at the Peppermill Casino. The annual award ceremony, Hope Dinner, is dedicated to honoring the donation partners of Nevada Donor Network that assist in the promotion of donation and transplantation.

Walton’s Funerals and Cremations, locally owned and operated since 1959, provides funeral, cremations and pre-planning services to Northern Nevada, Northern California and surrounding areas. With seven locations, Walton’s is one of the largest family-owned funeral home businesses in the nation. For information, visit http://www.waltonsfuneralhomes.com.
